1. What is Ledger?
Ledger is a global leader in security and infrastructure solutions for cryptocurrencies and blockchain applications. Our products empower users to own and control their private keys through a secure, hardware-based wallet.
If you’ve just purchased a Ledger Nano X or Nano S Plus, you’re in the right place. This guide will walk you through setting up your device, installing Ledger Live, securing your assets, and making your first transaction.
2. What's in the Box?
- Ledger hardware wallet (Nano X or Nano S Plus)
- USB cable
- Recovery sheets
- Instructions & welcome card
- Keychain or accessories (may vary)
3. Step-by-Step Setup Guide
Step 1: Go to ledger.com/start
Open your browser and navigate to https://www.ledger.com/start. This is the official start page. Beware of phishing websites and only download Ledger Live from the official site.
Step 2: Download Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the companion app for your Ledger hardware wallet. Download and install it on your desktop or mobile device. It is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android.
Step 3: Initialize Your Device
- Turn on your Ledger device by holding the power button.
- Follow on-screen instructions to set a PIN code.
- Write down your 24-word recovery phrase on the recovery sheet. Keep it secure and offline.
Step 4: Pair with Ledger Live
Open Ledger Live and connect your device via USB or Bluetooth (Nano X). Follow the verification steps to sync your device. You'll be prompted to install apps for each crypto asset you plan to manage.
4. Secure Your Assets
Ledger hardware wallets use a certified secure element (CC EAL5+) to isolate your private keys from any online exposure. Even if your computer is compromised, your crypto remains safe.
Best practices to stay secure:
- Always use Ledger Live to manage your crypto.
- Keep your recovery phrase offline and in a secure location.
- Double-check addresses before sending crypto.
- Enable password lock in Ledger Live for additional security.
5. Add Accounts and Receive Crypto
Within Ledger Live, you can add accounts for each crypto asset (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana). Once an account is created:
- Select the account and click "Receive".
- Verify the address on your Ledger device.
- Use this address to transfer crypto from exchanges or other wallets.
Make sure you only send supported assets to each address. Sending unsupported tokens can result in permanent loss.
6. Make Your First Transaction
To send crypto from your Ledger, click on "Send" in Ledger Live. Enter the recipient address, amount, and choose the appropriate network fee. Confirm the transaction on your Ledger device.
Always verify the recipient address on the device itself — this ensures you're not being tricked by malware.
7. Need Help?
Ledger offers a comprehensive support center with guides, troubleshooting tips, and live chat. Visit our help page at support.ledger.com.
If your device is lost or damaged, your assets are still safe as long as you have your recovery phrase. You can restore them on a new Ledger device.
